Ahly’s interest in the 22-year-old player comes as part of the club's ongoing efforts to bolster its midfield following the departure of Tunisian international Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane to Qatar's Al-Shamal and Malian midfielder El Hadji Malick Diouf (Aliou Dieng) to Spain’s Valencia, according to media reports.
Mendes began his professional career with French club Versailles 78 in 2022 before moving to Rodez in the French Ligue 2. During the recently concluded season, Mendes made 33 appearances for Rodez across all competitions.
On the international front, the youngster received his maiden call-up to represent the Cape Verde national team this year, featuring in a single international friendly so far.
During the current summer transfer window, Ahly made notable reinforcements after already signing four new players, including Dinamo Zagreb’s Algerian forward Monsef Bakrar, ENPPI duo Oktai Abdullah and Ali Mahmoud, alongside Moroccan striker Soufiane Ben Jdidou from Olympic Safi.
Ahly ended the previous Egyptian Premier League campaign in third place, trailing arch-rivals and champions Zamalek by three points.
