Alamein International Airport
In a statement on Tuesday, Egypt said the new flights would give Russian tourists direct access to additional destinations along the Mediterranean coast, particularly Alexandria, the North Coast, and New Alamein City.
The decision reflects growing Egyptian-Russian cooperation in transport and civil aviation and will help meet rising demand for direct travel between the two countries, the statement added.
Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) said it would accept applications from Russian airlines seeking permits to operate scheduled or charter services to the two Mediterranean airports.
The decision expands Russian air connectivity beyond Cairo and the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh. Russian airlines Aeroflot and Rossiya currently operate 21 routes between the two countries, while five Egyptian carriers serve another 32, according to Rosaviatsia.
Alamein International Airport, around 30 kilometres from New Alamein City, began receiving charter flights in 2022 and was prepared for regular services the following year. Borg El-Arab International Airport, west of Alexandria, also provides access to New Alamein, about 75 minutes away by road.
The expansion comes as Russian demand for Egyptian holidays remains strong.
In June, St Petersburg tourism chief Yevgeny Pankevich described Egypt as one of the most popular destinations for Russian travellers, stressing the importance of frequent flights between the two countries. “Russians love to travel to Egypt,” he told Ahram Online.
