Al Shamal confirmed Tawfik's departure earlier the same day, thanking him for his time at the club. Ahly said contracts chief Essam Seraj had completed the financial and administrative procedures in coordination with football director Wael Gomaa.
Tawfik became Ahly's fifth signing of the close season, following the arrivals of Aqtay Abdallah, Ali Mahmoud, Algeria's Moncef Bakrar and Morocco's Sofiane Bendjeddida.
The 29-year-old had joined Al Shamal on a free transfer last season after his previous contract with Ahly expired. He made 23 appearances for the Qatari side, providing three assists as the club finished as league runners-up.
His return comes days after Ahly confirmed the departure of Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, who moved to Al Shamal.
