Indian Ambassador Suresh K. Reddy celebrates India's 80th Independence Day in Cairo
Speaking at a reception at India House in Zamalek on 15 August, Ambassador Suresh K. Reddy said India’s progress reflected the aspirations of its 1.4 billion people and demonstrated what a developing country could achieve through innovation and resilience.
“From a post-colonial country to a country that’s charting a new path, India’s growth story is not merely a story of economic and technological heft,” Reddy said.
He pointed to India’s emergence as the world’s fourth-largest economy, its 250,000 start-ups and its position as the world’s fourth-largest manufacturing economy. Total trade exceeded $1.5 trillion last year, he said.
Reddy also highlighted India’s advances in space, infrastructure and digital technology, including the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission and the expansion of the country’s national highways and airports.
“Space is not the limit for India,” he said.
India has also moved from being primarily a defence importer towards becoming an exporter, Reddy said, citing the BrahMos cruise missile and other domestically developed weapons systems.
The ambassador also pointed to digital services as another area where India was seeking to make technological development more widely accessible, citing Bhashini, an AI-powered language platform, and the country’s broader digital public infrastructure.
The celebration, held under the theme “One Nation, One People, One Future”, brought together members of the Indian community in Egypt and friends of India.
Reddy described the 2047 target, known as “Viksit Bharat”, as an achievable goal driven particularly by India’s young population.
“India’s dream is not just a reflection of the aspirations of its people; it is also a reflection of the aspirations of the entire Global South,” he said.
“India is writing a story of transformation. A story of a nation that has travelled far, but is determined to travel further.”
