In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry said the Israeli strikes represent a dangerous escalation that threatens security and stability in the region.
Egypt stressed its full rejection of Israel's continued violations of Syrian territory, warning that such attacks risk further destabilizing Syria at a time when efforts are needed to support the country's security and stability and promote political solutions.
Cairo also called on the international community to assume its responsibilities by putting an end to repeated Israeli violations and adopting a firm policy to deter such actions, which it said contribute to a cycle of escalation in the region.
Egypt reaffirmed its support for Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, stressing the need to bolster efforts to restore security and stability in the country and preserve the capabilities of the Syrian state.
The Egyptian condemnation came after a series of airstrikes hit the Abu al-Duhur military airport in the eastern countryside of Idlib early Tuesday.
Syrian state media reported that eight Israeli airstrikes targeted the airport's runway and storage facilities, causing material damage.
No casualties were reported by Syrian military sources or residents living near the base.
The attack was the first reported Israeli strike on Syrian government military assets since March, according to Reuters.
The Abu al-Duhur facility has been out of service for years and changed hands several times during Syria's civil war. It is now under the control of the government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who came to power following the fall of Bashar Al-Assad's government in December 2024.
The strikes also came shortly after a Turkish military delegation visited the airport as part of preparations to rehabilitate its runways, according to reports.
Turkey has been supporting efforts to rebuild Syria's military and state institutions.
Syria's Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as an unjustified act of aggression and a violation of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for international action to halt what it described as repeated Israeli violations.
Israel's military presence in Syria
Israel has carried out repeated airstrikes against targets in Syria in the years since the Syrian conflict began, saying its operations are intended to prevent the transfer of weapons and military capabilities to hostile forces and to address security threats along its northern border.
Following the fall of Al-Assad's government in December 2024, Israel expanded its military operations in Syria and seized positions in the country's south, while striking Syrian military infrastructure.
Israel has remained wary of Syria's new Islamist-rooted leadership and has sought to prevent the rebuilding of Syrian military capabilities that it considers a potential threat.
Egypt has repeatedly stressed that respect for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity is essential to restoring stability in the country and preventing further regional escalation.
