The exorcism ritual known as zar has been part of Egyptian culture since ancient times. Some Egyptians believe that it's a way to drive away evil spirits and promote healing. The ritual is traditionally accompanied by music, led by women and with a few men playing instruments.

 The Mazaher Ensemble are continuing the tradition, although they perform the music for artistic purposes only.
