VIDEO: Dancers perform protest ballet outside Egyptian culture ministry

A small group of dancers from the Cairo Opera Ballet Company performed ‘Zorba’ in the street outside the Ministry of Culture in Zamalek on Sunday.

The performance took place as part of an evening of musical protest outside the culture ministry, which has been “occupied” by protesters since Wednesday.

Members of Egypt’s arts and culture scene have been occupying the ministry in protest at the policies of newly-appointed culture minister Alaa Abdel-Aziz, who has sacked a number of high profile culture officials.

Since Thursday, local musicians have delivered performances on a makeshift stage outside the ministry building, interspersed with chants condemning the new minister of culture, the president, and the Muslim Brotherhood.

With rumours circulating about the possibility of cutting the Cairo Opera House’s budget and even banning ballet because the costumes of performers are deemed immodest, dancers have decided to take to the streets and dance in defiance of what they deem an attack on Egypt's culture.
