Having stood idly by for 11 months while Israel killed nearly 41,000 Palestinians, two thirds of whom are women and children, leaders of the supposedly civilised, democratic West are now making strongly worded, human rights preaching statements against the death of six Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza early this week.

Despite American and Israeli expressions of “cautious optimism” regarding a ceasefire deal to end Israel’s nightmarish war on Gaza, public statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ongoing, daily massacres of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli Occupation Forces bear little hope of an end.

When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu goes as far as accusing his own defence minister of “adopting an anti-Israel narrative” for criticising his populist “absolute victory” slogan as nothing but “nonsense,” no wonder that expectations are very low that the genocidal Israeli war against Palestinians in Gaza might end any time soon, nor the heightened regional tension.

While President Joe Biden and top American officials continue to blame Hamas for the failure to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza, in statements on Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left no doubt as to who is responsible for the continuation of the Israeli genocide in the Occupied Strip.

US President Joe Biden’s statement earlier in the week about the need for the war on Gaza to end promptly is an indication that Washington is realising, however late, that Israel’s eight-month war comes at a hefty price, not just for the Palestinians being massacred the Israeli army for 245 days but also for the region, for US interests and allies in the Middle East and for this particular US administration.

After seven months of Israel’s relentless and savage revenge war against the Palestinian people in Gaza, where nearly 35,000 people were killed and 80,000 others wounded, the vast majority innocent civilians, there is little room for optimism that the current, extremist Israeli government will heed the near unanimous international appeals not to commit another large-scale round of atrocities and insist on taking over the southern city of Rafah.
