Former Romanian prime minister Adrian Nastase was sentenced Monday by the Supreme Court to a two-year jail term for graft, at the end of a trial closely monitored by the European Union.

Nastase, who headed the Social-Democrat government between 2000 and 2004, was charged with syphoning off funds totalling 1.7 million euros ($2.2 million) for his 2004 election campaign.

The former prime minister, who was not in court when the sentence was announced, told Realitatea TV channel he would appeal the ruling.
