A decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn the sanctions imposed on Masry in the wake of the Port Said tragedy has been frozen upon the appeal of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA).

The EFA won an appeal they had lodged with the Swiss Federal Court after Masry were spared punishment following Egypt’s worst-ever football disaster.

Over 70 Ahly fans were killed when they were confronted by thousands of Masry’s home fans following the end of an ill-tempered Egyptian Premier League clash on 1 February.

The coastal club was initially banned for two seasons and demoted to the second division by the EFA but CAS overturned the sanction upon Masry’s appeal.

Ahly’s supporters were enraged after learning that EFA did not send a representative to attend a hearing held by CAS to look into the case, which apparently prompted CAS to issue a swift verdict.

However, the Swiss Federal Court’s latest decision, which they revealed in a letter sent to the EFA, means that the relevant parties will wind up back at square one.
